5 myths about the IVF procedure, which it’s time to forget about once and for all

Health Tips

1. Is it true that unhealthy children are born after the IVF procedure?

It is a myth. Scientists have found that children born using IVF get sick no more often than everyone else. According to large-scale studies conducted in clinics in Sweden, Holland, Great Britain, the USA, China and Japan, health problems in children born through IVF are associated either with their prematurity or with the genetic and somatic health of their parents. This means that the cause of the disease is often the base, which led to the infertility of the mother.

Data. To date, there are opportunities to prevent diseases of the unborn child. For example, by transferring no more than one embryo, multiple pregnancy is excluded, which is the main cause of preterm birth and prematurity. And genetic testing of embryos significantly reduces the percentage of children with chromosomal diseases. At the same time, full-term “test-tube” babies are slightly taller than their peers, which is associated with the hormonal saturation of the woman’s body during the period of egg production and the use of enriched media for culturing embryos. Observations show that IVF children are often ahead of their peers in development, since parents devote more time and attention to a child who has received such labor.

2. Does IVF increase the risk of cancer?

It is a myth. And one of the main fears of the IVF procedure in the vast majority of women. There have been many studies on the relationship between hormonal stimulation and cancer, but none of them showed an increase in the risk of developing cancer.

Data. Before IVF, a woman undergoes an extensive examination, which includes not only the study of the pelvic organs, but also the lungs, mammary glands, thyroid gland and general health. Due to this, many diseases are recognized at an early stage. It may turn out that it is the predisposition to cancer that is the cause of infertility.

3. Pregnancy after IVF is more difficult?

And this is also a delusion. Pregnancy after IVF develops in the same way as after independent conception. It differs only in the psychological state and physical health of the mother.
Data. Unfortunately, not every IVF cycle and embryo transfer ends in pregnancy. Even the best methods do not always lead to success, especially if a woman is in tension, and the fear of pregnancy is more than the desire to get it. But, even when a long-awaited pregnancy occurs, the psychological state affects its course. Stress is a storm of hormones that can increase the tone of the uterus, lead to bleeding in the early stages, and in later periods – to the threat of miscarriage or premature birth. In addition, individual characteristics of the body can also affect the development of pregnancy: for example, overweight, somatic diseases – hypo- and hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, kidney disease. If the expectant mother monitors her emotional state and health, following the instructions of doctors, then the risks are minimized and the pregnancy will proceed calmly.

4. IVF is a process that goes against nature

Also a myth. IVF does not go against human nature, but promotes it by correcting biological processes that, for some reason, are impossible in a woman’s body. Infertility is included in the international classification of diseases along with appendicitis, myocardial infarction or diabetes. It is unlikely that anyone will protest and desire, for example, to refuse insulin therapy for type 1 diabetes. Someone will say that the comparison is incorrect, however, if a woman dreams of becoming a mother and cannot, her quality of life is significantly reduced, she becomes prone to neurosis, depression, which have a negative impact on the whole body as a whole.

Data. In vitro fertilization is one of the most high-tech methods of treatment, thanks to which millions of women and men have become parents, and some are already grandparents, because the first IVF children are now about forty years old. Modern women use cosmetics, drive a car, travel through the air on an airplane. And no one thinks that it is against nature and unnatural. IVF is also part of the progress and development of science.

5. Infertility can be overcome with marathons and rituals

This myth is perhaps the most attractive and dangerous. All and sundry speculate on faith in a miracle. Fashion marathons kill precious time: the chances of pregnancy decrease after 35 years. Egg cells are laid in utero and during life they are only consumed and grow old. Over the years, the skin loses its elasticity, hair turns gray, visual acuity decreases, and the eggs lose their ability to be fertilized and develop into a healthy embryo.

Data. The only advantage of marathons can be the motivation to lead a healthy lifestyle and work with a psychologist, since many women with infertility are prone to neurosis and depression. Practice shows that patients who prepare for the IVF program and subsequent pregnancy together with a psychologist achieve their goals faster. Not a single marathon will solve problems with tube obstruction, endometriosis, uterine pathology, and will not cure severe male infertility.
