When did Ayurveda appear

It is impossible to say exactly when Ayurveda appeared. The first written sources date back to the first and third centuries of our era, but everything began much earlier. In the Indian tradition, much of the knowledge has been passed down orally for thousands of years. Ayurveda is the fourth part of the ancient Indian Vedas, a sacred body of texts believed to be of divine origin.

Philosophy of Ayurveda

First of all, Ayurveda is a whole philosophical system, and not just a set of rules and medical prescriptions. Hindus believe that everything in a person should be harmonious – body, mind, soul, otherwise it is impossible to achieve the state of enlightenment.

The human body is a complex and fragile system built on the balance of five vital elements: ether (wind), water, air, earth and fire. Three main vital forces come from the primary elements, which, in turn, are responsible for the functioning of the internal organs and the nervous system.

Proper nutrition helps to maintain the balance of power, but if it is disturbed by bad food, thoughts, anxieties, people and deeds, then a person becomes ill. Moreover, the cause of the disease and the affected organ are not necessarily related.

Ayurvedic principles of nutrition

According to Ayurveda and common sense, all people are different, each of us comes into this world with his own set of character traits, tastes in food and clothing, eye color, physique. Differences and features are inherent in us from birth and depend on the combination of the main elements and the dominance of one of them.

There are nine types of people – three basic and six mixed. Each of them should have their own individual approach to food and lifestyle. The three main types are vata (ether or wind and air), pita (fire and water) and kapha (fire and earth).

Vata type people

Vata people are thin, with thin skin and curly hair, they are fast and mobile, they easily remember, but just as easily forget new information. It is difficult for them to endure the cold and keep warm. Therefore, food should be hot or warm, hearty, with spices, but not too spicy. Such people lose weight faster than they gain.

Their diet must necessarily include rice, dairy products, bread and flour products, sweet fruits, soy, lentils, nuts, vegetable oil, ginger, sweets, especially halva and honey. Meat, fish and seafood are allowed in small quantities. It is advisable to exclude coffee, alcohol and black tea, but ginger with honey, on the contrary, is very useful.

Pitta type people

Pittas are strongly built, with fair skin and hair, they have a quick temper, they do not tolerate heat well, they absolutely cannot feel hunger, but they have an excellent metabolism. Food for them should be light, not hot and freshly cooked. Such people should not eat at night and in a bad mood.

Recommended products: milk, cottage cheese, butter, yeast-free bread, white rice, olive oil, potatoes, olives, cabbage, pumpkin, zucchini, mushrooms, lettuce. It is better to exclude tomatoes, eggplant, garlic, onions, hot peppers. From fruits, pears, apples, oranges, melon, watermelon, grapes are useful, you should not eat bananas and peaches. Meat can be chicken and game. It is good to drink different teas, but alcohol and coffee are better not worth it.

Kapha type people

Kapha people tend to be overweight and melancholy. They quickly gain weight and lose it hard. Food for them should be hot, dry, light, unsweetened and with a lot of spices and spices.

Of the sweet, only honey and fruits are allowed, especially those that have an astringent taste (for example, persimmon and mango), but it is better to exclude bananas, melons and watermelon. Almost all vegetables are useful: radishes, cabbage, celery, spinach, onions, garlic, beets, peppers, lettuce, asparagus. It is better not to use nuts, but seeds can be. From meat, you can eat chicken and turkey, fish and seafood are allowed in small quantities. Coffee and cold drinks are prohibited, but you can drink dry wine and various teas.

General Ayurvedic nutrition recommendations

The right set of products, formed depending on the type of person, is only half the battle. There are a number of basic principles of nutrition according to Ayurveda.

  • Food must be fresh, preferably just cooked, it is better to exclude canned and frozen foods, as they are considered dead.
  • You need to eat in a calm environment, slowly and only when you feel hungry.
  • It is best to have the main meal in the middle of the day, and before going to bed, drink a glass of warm milk or herbal tea.
  • Follow the principles of food pairing: for example, you should not combine milk and sour foods or rice and bread.
  • Also pay attention to the seasonality of products, because our body has a certain biorhythm, and the discrepancy between the time of year and the food consumed can adversely affect the body’s mode of operation.

And, of course, in addition to the proper nutrition system, do not forget about physical activity and breathing exercises.
