Barley is a purulent inflammation of the hair follicle of an eyelash or a nearby sebaceous gland. This is an infectious process, the culprit of which is usually staphylococcus aureus.
At the edge of the eyelid, a painful area of swelling appears, which begins to rapidly increase in size. Often the process is accompanied by swelling of the eyelid, redness of the mucous membrane of the eye.
After 2-3 days, the barley acquires a white-yellow color – a cavity filled with pus is formed. On the 3rd-4th day, the barley head opens, its contents are released, inflammatory changes and soreness gradually subside, and by the end of the week the eyelid heals.
If the process captures several hair follicles or sebaceous glands at once, then the condition may worsen fever and headache, swollen lymph nodes.
Do not touch your face with dirty hands, scratch and rub your eyes. Each family member must have their own towel.
It is strictly forbidden to use someone else’s cosmetics. You need to carefully remove makeup before going to bed.
It is useful to take vitamins A and C, eat raw vegetables and fruits.
It is forbidden to squeeze barley on your own! This can lead to phlegmon of the orbit and loss of the eye! With the development of barley, it is advisable to immediately consult a doctor.
At the very beginning of the disease, it is necessary to moisten the point of greatest pain with 70% alcohol. You can make “eyeliner” green eyes. A handy tool for this can be a pointed match with a ball of cotton wool tightly wound around it.
Sunbathing is very useful during this period.
Dry heat is shown in the first 2-3 days – the period of “ripening” of barley: attach a hot boiled chicken egg wrapped in a soft cloth to the eyelid. UHF therapy is especially effective.
It is necessary to instill a 20% solution of sodium sulfacyl into the eye 3-4 times a day.
After opening the barley, sodium sulfacyl is placed in the eye 2-3 times a day in the form of an ointment, 1% tetracycline ointment, 1% yellow mercury ointment, etc.
When the temperature rises, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
In some cases, surgical opening of the barley is required.
In order to disinfect the eyelid, it is recommended to wash your eyes every day with baby or cosmetic soap.
If barley occurs frequently, accompanied by furunculosis, herpes and frequent colds, it is recommended to conduct a comprehensive examination to identify possible causes of reduced immunity.
