Delayed motherhood: how to freeze eggs

Health Tips

In vitro fertilization, or IVF, is often the only option for couples who cannot conceive naturally. We talked about all the possible options for artificial conception here.

Now the task becomes more complicated: you agree to IVF, but not now.

How to Calculate Your Chances

The term “old primiparous” has long since gone out of use as unethical. But the medical statistics are:

  • under the age of 25, 85% of women can become pregnant within one year of regular intercourse;
  • at 25-35 years old, the probability of getting pregnant naturally is about 45%;
  • after 35 years – 25%;
  • after 40 – less than 10%.

Therefore, if you are planning pregnancy and childbirth sometime after 40, then it would be very wise to set aside some healthy eggs in reserve now.

After 35-37 years, it makes sense to evaluate the ovarian reserve – to find out the number of eggs that can be used for fertilization. This will require a series of laboratory tests (usually it is necessary to pass tests for FSH – follicle-stimulating hormone and AMH – anti-Mullerian hormone) and ultrasound diagnostics. The doctor, using transvaginal ultrasound, determines the size of the ovaries and the state of blood flow, and also counts the number of antral (up to 8 mm in size) follicles. After the examination, a woman can find out when menopause is expected to occur.
