Donate blood – save a life

Health Tips

You are right, in general. Blood is needed. Scientists have not yet been able to create an artificial substitute for it, and accidents and terrorist attacks occur daily. And every day in oncology hospitals, a child or an adult can die due to the fact that his blood lacks some important components. But in Russia, for some reason, people do not like to donate blood.

Free of charge, i.e. free of charge

All over the world, donation is an ideological matter. People donate blood simply because they want to save other people – with the same ease and regularity with which, for example, they transfer money to charity.

During the war, 5.5 million donors were registered in the Soviet Union, thanks to which thousands of wounded soldiers were saved. After the war and until perestroika, being a donor was considered cool and honorable. But in the 90s, a critical situation with donation developed in the country (as, indeed, with medicine in general), for each specific case, volunteers literally begged for blood. Restoration of the system began only in 2008, with the Blood Service development program.

The fact is that the incubation period of many dangerous infectious diseases – hepatitis B, C, HIV – is about six months. If you do not have a virus on the day of blood donation, this does not mean that it does not exist. Therefore, your blood cannot be used for a transfusion right away, it is frozen and stored for six months. The most important thing for an irregular donor is to return after the due date and recheck, otherwise the donated blood will be destroyed.

However, you can also get bonuses for your nobility:

Blood or plasma

You can take 450 ml of blood at a time. Therefore, there is a rule: the donor must weigh at least 45 kg, so that no more than 1% of body weight is “taken” from him at a time. On the first day after that, you may feel weak, so you can’t drive a motorcycle for a day (for some reason, there is no ban on a car). It will take several days to fully recover. You can repeat the procedure without harm to health no earlier than after three months. That is, you donate blood three or four times a year.

But there are options!

Plasma is needed for large blood losses, such as traffic accidents or terrorist attacks. A person dies during bleeding not from a lack of formed elements, but from a sharp decrease in the volume of circulating blood. If this volume is restored, then in the next few hours the body will begin to reproduce the missing one on its own.

And in oncology hospitals, as a rule, blood cells (usually platelets) are required. They are filtered out and the plasma is infused back into you (this is called plateletpheresis). You can donate platelets every two to three weeks, as well as plasma.

What do you lose

Here we will not repeat the propaganda that you have probably seen-heard-read before. And let’s not lie that “donation is easy and pleasant”, you “spend 15 minutes to save someone’s life.” Donation is an act. A decisive act of an adult who knows how to properly prioritize. And it certainly isn’t 15 minutes. This is sometimes even more than one visit: before donating blood for a transfusion, you first pass a simple analysis and undergo a medical examination – even without queues, this will take about an hour. Then, on the same day or the next, you donate either blood or plasma or platelets. In the first case, you will need 15 minutes, in the others – about two hours.

In principle, not so much for the sake of saving someone’s life.
