For Prevention: Aromatherapy for Immunity

Health Tips

They say that on New Year’s Eve, both children and adults asked Santa Claus for ordinary snow in addition to bears, Winx dolls and country cottages. Yes, we missed the blizzards and frosts! In many cities of our country, winter is just now coming into its legal rights, and with it come colds and flu. No one wants to waste the remaining winter days fighting a runny nose and fever. So why not make the traditional cold prevention more effective and … fragrant, using the properties of essential oils in addition to it?

Smell is the most ancient sense. It was born much earlier than love, which we consider eternal… Many animals still receive the main share of information about the world around them through their nose, their life depends on the sharpness of their sense of smell. For us, this is a secondary feeling, we have forgotten how to use our nose to its fullest. Nevertheless, the legacy of the ancestors left a deep mark on the human subconscious. Aromas hovering in the air, even those that we do not feel, affect not only the psyche, emotions and memories, but even the functioning of internal organs, body temperature andimmunity.

In the course of experiments on finding people in an artificial atmosphere (in a special chamber devoid of biological impurities, dust and odors), an amazing feature was revealed: a person who stays in an artificial atmosphere for a long time loses the ability to resist infection, his immunity decreases sharply. As soon as smells appear in the air, the immune systems return to normal.

How do odors affect the body?

What is the power of fragrance?

Essential oils are not just scents. It is a concentrate of chemicals that are used by plants to attract pollinators, protect against diseases and pests, sunburn and hypothermia. It is these properties that a person is trying to borrow from nature, who has resorted to herbal medicine and aromatherapy since ancient times.

Molecules of essential oils, due to their shape and chemical structure, very easily penetrate the skin and mucous membranes into the blood and are carried throughout the body, entering the cells and being included in the metabolism. Natural essential oils contain up to 800 components, many of which are a source of synthesis of the most important vitamins (E, D, K), pheromones, steroid hormones, antioxidants, enzymes, bile acids and other biologically active substances.

Essential oils act on the body in ultra-low doses. When exposed to smell on the olfactory receptors located in the nose, information about the aroma reaches the brain in a matter of seconds. There the smell evokes memories and emotions, inflames feelings, relaxes or, on the contrary, stimulates the body to perform an important task. At the level of the brain, essential oils affect the production of regulatory hormones, the effect of which extends to all organs and the immune system.

Axioms of aromatherapy

one. Before using a new essential oil, be sure to test the compatibility of yourself and your loved one. flavor. Put a drop of oil on a handkerchief and take it out and smell it several times throughout the day. If this test is passed successfully, you can proceed to the contact test. Mix 1 drop of 100% oil or fragrance in a teaspoon of any vegetable oil and apply to the back of the forearm. If after 15-20 minutes no irritation is observed on the skin, you can enjoy the chosen aromatic medicine.

2. Do not forget that the presence of some acute and chronic diseases, pregnancy, lactation may be contraindications to individual oils and aromatherapy in general. If in doubt, it is best to consult a doctor. In any case, read the instructions carefully before use. Oils can be taken internally only as prescribed by a doctor.

3. Aromaprophylaxis should be carried out in courses, strictly observing the doses of oils and the regimen of procedures. With prolonged use of the same oil, its effect is dulled.

4. Aromatherapy does not exclude traditional methods of treatment and prevention, but only complements them, allows you to reduce the dose and frequency of use of drugs.

Using an aroma lamp

Fumigation of a dwelling is perhaps one of the first ways to use aromatic substances that a person has mastered. For the prevention of colds and flu, we need all the same ingredients as in antiquity: fire, water and oil. But the shaman in torn skins and the ritual fire was replaced by an elegant little thing – an aroma lamp.

The range of aroma lamps is very wide: from clay, ceramics and glass, stone, metal and wood. At the top of the lamp is a reservoir for water and oil, under which a tea candle is placed. It is important that the water in the tank does not boil. Therefore, for a high-quality lamp, the distance from the candle to the water tank should be at least 15-20 cm, and the tank itself should be quite capacious.

There are electric aroma lamps and even lamps that spray oil with an ultrasonic diffuser. In the latter, the oil does not heat up, which means that it fully retains its useful properties and is more economically consumed, which is a definite plus. For IT workers, marketers have developed another useful device: USB aroma lamp. Now you can enjoy your favorite aroma without leaving the keyboard.

Do you know that:

  • Aromatization of indoor air, together with the traditional prevention of flu and colds, significantly increases its effectiveness. Judge for yourself: essential oils have a powerful disinfecting effect. For example, fennel oil reduces the content of fungal flora in the air, on the skin and mucous membranes by 4-5 times, lemon wormwood oil – by 2-2.5 times.

  • Monarda, basil and eucalyptus oils proved to be extremely effective in the fight against mycoplasmas and streptococci, not inferior in their antibacterial properties to tetracycline antibiotics.

  • Great tools for air purification indoors – oils of pine, spruce, fir and cedar. They not only have an antiviral and antibacterial effect, but also ionize the air and purify it of toxins. The antiseptic effect after a session of aromatherapy remains indoors for a day.

There are many schemes for strengthening immunity and aromaprophylaxis of colds, here is one of them.

Taken to protect against colds blend of eucalyptus and lavender oils in a ratio of 1:1. Sessions are held 1-2 times a day for 20-25 minutes for 2-3 weeks. Then there is a break of 1-1.5 months.

lavender oil has a whole bunch of healing properties. Lavender significantly enhances antiviral and antibacterial immunity, which makes it one of the most powerful herbal remedies for flu and colds. Aroma prophylaxis with lavender oil can reduce the incidence of acute respiratory infections and influenza by a third, reduce the number of complications and speed up recovery. In addition, lavender facilitates breathing, allows you to get rid of cough.

Eucalyptus has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect, as well as high immunomodulatory and antiseptic activity. The antimicrobial properties of eucalyptus are enhanced 20 times when used together with basil essential oil. Eucalyptus oil enhances the work of the bronchial glands, which is expressed in an expectorant effect in influenza and bronchitis.

Aromakulon – a talisman from ailments

As an individual protection against colds, you can always have an aroma pendant with you. This is a small medallion that is most often worn around the neck. 1-2 drops of essential oil are dripped into the hole of the pendant or directly onto its surface.

On sale you can find aroma pendants in the form of vessels with a cork through which slow evaporation occurs. There are aroma rings, aromatic bracelets, cell phone pendants. You can find aroma jewelry made of precious metals and precious stones.

If you have opted for inexpensive clay or ceramic products, it is advisable to purchase several medallions that can be used with oils that are similar in smell and properties, since it can be difficult to remove oil residues from the surface of porous materials. It is allowed to wash such pendants with warm water and soda after use.

The inhalation of the evaporating aroma is nothing more than a cold inhalation. Using various essential oils and their combinations, you can significantly strengthen the immune system, in addition, disinfect the air in your “personal” space. The use of aroma coulomb helps to ease breathing at the first sign of a cold, stop a runny nose, and get rid of a cough.

Monarda essential oil – has a pronounced antibacterial and antifungal effect, relieves inflammation, facilitates breathing, enhances general and local immunity, and when used together increases the effectiveness of antibiotics.

Tea tree essential oil stimulates the body’s defenses, has antiviral and antibacterial activity, is effective against influenza, herpesprevents the development of complications in acute respiratory infections.

Basil oil has immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-allergic, expectorant effect, exhibits antioxidant properties.

fir oil one of the best remedies for preventing colds and flu. It perfectly fights viruses and bacteria of the surrounding air, prevents purulent complications of the common cold, and is effective against pathogens of whooping cough, diphtheria, tuberculosis, and even anthrax.

Aroma baths – for those who like it hot

This year’s lazy winter generously rewarded us with dank weather. Now plus, then minus, high humidity and fog. Returning home in a “shabby” form, take a warm bath with essential oils.

Pine oil relieves inflammation of the respiratory tract, has excellent antimicrobial and antiviral properties, tonic and tonic effect, strengthens the immune system.

Sage – a good remedy for the prevention of colds, has a bactericidal and antiseptic effect, relieves pain and stress, soothes, strengthens weakened immunity.

For a regular bath, take 5 drops of essential oil, stir it in a glass of milk, salt solution, honey, bath foam, and then add it to the water. To enhance evaporation, you can add a few drops directly to hot water. The duration of the bath is 10-15 minutes.

To strengthen the immune forces of the body, baths are taken every other day at the height of the cold season, gradually increasing the dosage of oil from 5 to 10 drops. The total duration of the course is no more than 12-14 procedures. If you take baths from time to time, use no more than 7 drops of essential oil. In a bath with aromatic oils, we get a two-in-one effect: exposure through the skin and steam inhalation.

To save time, you can prepare steam inhalations. For 0.5 liters of hot water, take 3-5 drops of pine, spruce, fir, eucalyptus, lavender oil or a mixture thereof. Covered with a towel, breathe over fragrant steam for 5-7 minutes. With the initial manifestations of a cold, the procedure can be repeated 2-3 times a day.

Attention: hot baths are contraindicated at elevated temperatures, diseases of the heart and blood vessels, and some skin diseases. If you suffer from bronchial asthma, it is better to replace steam procedures with cold inhalations using an aroma lamp.

A small bottle of essential oil lasts for a long time, which ultimately turns out to be beneficial for the family economy, but one-time spending on a “cold kit” is not always painless for the budget. And finding a natural and undiluted essential oil can be difficult. If you don’t have the oil you need on hand, don’t worry.

In the kitchen of every housewife there is always onion, garlic, dill, black pepper, ginger, horseradish, mustard and other spices that have been used by Russian people for protection from the harsh climate since ancient times. And although they are inferior to aromatic oils in their aesthetic qualities, they have no equal in the fight against viruses and microbes!
