Signs of gastritis
Gastritis remains the most common disease of the stomach. According to doctors, the number of patients with gastritis is only growing and now it is already difficult to meet a person who does not have it – to one degree or another. Gastritis is an inflammation of the gastric mucosa, which can become covered with erosions and then an ulcer over the course of the disease. The cause is often the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. Having penetrated into the gastric mucosa, this microbe, which feels great in an acidic environment, causes inflammation. The bacterium is a carcinogen, that is, it can contribute to the occurrence of cancer – under favorable conditions. It is estimated that 60% of the population has it.
What are the signs of gastritis?
- pain “in the pit of the stomach” – where the lower edges of the costal arches meet, below the sternum;
- stomach pain on an empty stomach.
These are the most common and obvious signs. But there are a number of other symptoms that indicate problems with the stomach.
When to go on a diet
For example, a number of patients report a dry cough. What is the connection with the stomach? When acidic contents of the stomach are thrown into the esophagus and spasms or even burns of the vocal cords occur. People lose their voice and blame the cold for everything, but in fact the problem is in the stomach. In this case, you should immediately change the diet. Namely, exclude:
- caffeine (coffee cocoa chocolate);
- mint in any form;
- fatty food;
- carbonated drinks.
It is important to emphasize that gastritis does not occur due to nutritional errors, as many people think. The main reason is the aforementioned bacterium, then we are talking about infectious gastritis. Also, the disease can be non-infectious. Gastritis can be caused by smoking, taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen and a number of other popular drugs that we often take) and drinking alcohol. These are all predisposing factors to a change in the pH of the gastric contents. Fatty foods can aggravate the symptoms, but are not the cause.
Dangerous complications of gastritis
Depending on the level of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, there are:
- gastritis with low acidity;
- with normal acidity;
- with high acidity.
How is gastritis treated?
First of all, a decrease in the acidity of the stomach. For this purpose, you can take proton pump blockers. After consultation with the doctor, of course. In chronic gastritis, weaker H2 receptor blockers or antacids are used to reduce stomach acid. To get rid of Helicobacter pylori, you need to take antibiotics.
Gastritis, with which many live for years, is dangerous for its complications. These include an ulcer, perforation of the ulcer with the development of peritonitis, cicatricial deformity, when an obstruction occurs between the stomach and duodenum, and finally, stomach cancer.
One of the dangerous symptoms that should alert is an increase in the left supraclavicular node. This is the first sign for a doctor to look into a patient’s stomach. For this purpose, gastroscopy is performed. The procedure allows you to examine the mucosa, find out the extent of inflammation, the presence of erosion and neoplasms. In case of suspicion, a piece of the mucous membrane is taken for a biopsy.
How can you help yourself at home?
If you have gastritis, in your home medicine cabinet, as well as if you travel, there must be a number of drugs. These include antacids (Almagel, Maalox, Rennie and not only). They envelop the walls of the stomach with a protective film.
In case of errors in nutrition (we ate corny at the festive table), enzymes should be taken to help cope with the excess load on the stomach. The most common: mezim, creon, pancreatin and others.
If you experience pain in the stomach, you can use antispasmodics. You should refrain from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs – we mentioned that they aggressively affect the gastric mucosa. With heartburn, you should have gastric acid blockers in your first-aid kit: omez, omeprazole, ultop, nexium, nolpaza and others. These remedies will remove its manifestations.
