Gastritis: symptoms and prevention

There are only a few days left before the New Year. We are spinning in the pre-holiday carousel, barely having time to rest at the end of the day and tick off the gift lists. There is absolutely no time for proper rest and normal nutrition: how can you waste the last hours of the outgoing year, when the dress is not yet ready, the gifts are not walled up in colored foil and at home with a “rolling ball” ?!

However, even a perfectly prepared holiday will not be a joy if health problems, especially with the stomach, loom on the horizon. You don’t want your enemy to be in the hospital on New Year’s Eve, and you don’t want to suffer from pain at home, sipping seagulls with crackers and looking at the forbidden gastronomic abundance. Therefore, despite the pre-New Year’s time trouble, let’s properly prepare our body for the holiday.

Among the most common New Year’s diseases, digestive disorders are in the lead along with hypertension: a third of people experience unpleasant symptoms of dyspepsia even before the holidays, and after the feast, more than half of the celebrants remember the stomach, intestines and regret what they have eaten and drunk. And at the end of the New Year holidays, accompanied by mass gluttony, doctors are increasingly stating “gastritis” and sent to “swallow a light bulb.” So much for “New Happiness!”

Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach. As a result of a variety of reasons, the gastric mucosa is injured, swells, sometimes covered with erosions and ulcers. The work of the stomach is disturbed: instead of a harmonious contraction of the muscles, painful spasms, nausea and vomit. The production of gastric juice and mucus is disrupted, food is poorly digested, which is accompanied by intoxicationupset stool, bloating.

If the cause that caused the discomfort is short-term, they speak of acute gastritis. Symptoms last for several days, and then complete recovery occurs. After a while, you won’t even remember the eating disorder.

If there are many reasons and they act permanently, the stomach begins to hurt regularly, chronic gastritis develops – a disease that does not go away on its own and is almost incurable. Doctors can only achieve remission – a long absence of manifestations. However, under some circumstances, usually at the most inopportune moment, chronic gastritis tends to worsen.

What provokes gastritis?

  1. All diseases are from the nerves, and gastritis, first of all. In a tense situation, stress hormones are released. These hormones cause an increase in the aggressiveness of the environment in the stomach: hydrochloric acid of gastric juice is able to dissolve an iron nail, and even the wall of the stomach – even more so. The constant action of stress sooner or later ends with gastritis.
  1. Three meals a day: Monday, Wednesday, Friday… This way of satisfying hunger can hardly be called a regimen. Having earned money, you can forget about lunch, but the stomach will not forget: the components of gastric juice, not finding a use for themselves, will begin to destroy the mucous membrane.

If you deliberately keep yourself on a starvation diet, the stomach gradually reduces the production of digestive juice, becomes lazy, and when you swallow a triple serving in the evening, having reached the refrigerator, it refuses to work.

  1. Fried, spicy, peppered, smoked food contributes to the development of the disease in weak stomachs. The temperature of food and drink also plays an important role. Think about it, if your tea is so hot that “the hand can’t stand it”, how the stomach and esophagus will endure it, where the mucous membrane is much softer than the battered skin on the hands.

  2. Smokingalcohol and drugs of some classes (corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory and analgesics, etc.) have a direct irritating effect on the stomach wall, disrupt blood supply and restore the mucous membrane.

  3. At risk for the development of gastritis are those who already have a “bouquet” of pancreatitis, cholecystitis or cholelithiasis, hepatitis, dysbacteriosisduodenitis and other gastrointestinal diseases.

  4. One of the causes of gastritis is the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which lives in the stomachs of 70-90% of people, and, when it pleases, causes gastric disorders up to ulcers and cancer.

  5. In addition, the causes of acute gastritis can be poor-quality food, infectious diseases, carious teeth, and even the habit of eating in a hurry, swallowing food pieces dry.

How to recognize gastritis?

Acute gastritis is most clearly manifested, a person feels similar symptoms during an exacerbation of chronic gastritis:

  • weakness, salivation, sometimes chills and fever to subfebrile numbers;
  • lack of appetite, often aversion to the smell and appearance of food, nausea, vomiting;

  • pain in the epigastric region – “under the spoon” – where the lower edges of the costal arches meet, below the sternum; aching pain, sometimes cramping, aggravated by back bending of the body, physical activity.

A person quickly gets used to the manifestations of chronic gastritis, considering it to be his natural state, these are:

  • disturbed appetite with periods of hunger and aversion to food, and over the years peculiar food preferences are developed: the patient subconsciously avoids those foods that can cause another exacerbation;

  • those who are ill for a long time usually have low body weight, often hypotension;

  • stool disorder from constipation to relief even during the day;

  • bouts of nausea, especially in the morning;

  • sour taste in the mouth, often heartburn;

  • with errors in the diet, belching with the smell of rotten eggs is the result of slow digestion of food in a sick stomach;

  • feeling of fullness in the stomach even after a small portion;

  • associated with eating pain in the stomach of varying intensity, sometimes pain “in the pit of the stomach” on an empty stomach.

The result of long-term gastritis is noticeable changes in appearance: hair grows dull, split, nails exfoliate, the skin loses its freshness and healthy color, acne often appears, a tendency to food allergies. A sick stomach does not perform its duties well and a person receives less vitamins, minerals and other food components. Often there is an unpleasant obsessive odor from the mouth.

Why is gastritis dangerous?

It would seem that the stomach is nonsense, it will hurt and stop. Fortunately, this is what happens most often: we relieve periodic exacerbations with home remedies and, after lying down for a day at home, we go to work bypassing the clinic. However, there are dangerous symptoms that should not be missed, hoping for a “maybe”. You need to seek immediate medical attention if:

  1. An increase in body temperature above 38 C.

  2. Intense pain attack, not amenable to the usual means.

  3. Nighttime hunger pains that keep you awake.

  4. Weight loss, severe weakness.

  5. Constant feeling of heaviness after eating, sensation of fluid transfusion in the stomach.

  6. Vomiting that looks like coffee grounds or black tarry stools.

Even one of these signs is a reason to see a doctor.

Dangerous complications of gastritis are: ulcer stomach, bleeding, perforation of the ulcer (melting of the stomach wall) with the development of peritonitis, cicatricial deformity of the pylorus (when there is an obstruction between the stomach and the duodenum, food cannot leave the stomach), a malignant neoplasm of the stomach.

The danger of gastritis also lies in the fact that the severity of its manifestations does not always coincide with the true picture of “destruction” in the stomach, complications can sneak up unnoticed. For example, “silent” ulcers, without pain, often occur. Therefore, those suffering from chronic gastritis should periodically visit a doctor and undergo a routine examination, even against the background of excellent health.

Diagnosis and prevention of the disease

To make a diagnosis of gastritis, a doctor usually needs an examination and complaints. But in order to clarify the manifestations of the disease, the doctor may prescribe FGDS (fibrogastroduodenoscopy), or, in a popular way, swallow a light bulb.

The procedure is unpleasant, but very informative. It is carried out on an empty stomach. After superficial anesthesia of the mucous membrane of the larynx, a thin probe is passed through the esophagus into the stomach – a tube equipped with special equipment. With the help of this device, the doctor can verify the events taking place in the stomach, examine the mucosa, find out the extent of inflammation, the presence of erosion, ulcerative lesions of the wall, bleeding, and even suspect cancer. In case of any concerns, it is possible to take a tiny piece of the mucous membrane for analysis – a biopsy. Sometimes medical manipulations are performed right during the procedure. In addition, during EGD it is possible to take an analysis for Helicobacter pylori.

Preventing gastritis is easier than you think. To do this, stop saving time on eating, accustom yourself to eat “hot” at lunch and give up too heavy dinners. Ideally, meals should be fractional 4-5 times a day, in small portions.

Important right deal with stress. On “black” days, try to move more, giving vent to adrenaline: a swimming pool, a run in the park or an evening at a fitness club will help drive away bad emotions, and a good comedy or a good book before going to bed will relieve the accumulated tension.

Pay attention to your teeth: caries can become a source of infection in the stomach, and problems with chewing food will soon backfire on indigestion.

In general, the main thing to remember is that the main means of preventing gastritis, as well as treatment, is the correct planning of the daily menu. To protect your stomach, try to fry less, less often add seasonings and spices to your food. The best diet for the stomach is liquid cereals, dairy products, soups and borscht, wholemeal bread, steamed food.

People suffering from chronic gastritis should be careful at the festive table. Knowing your weakness, it is better to prefer fried cutlets and chops stewed boiled pork or steamed meat, you can bake a bird in a microwave oven. For dressing salads, it is advisable to use vegetable oil or sauces based on sour cream and cheese.

Of alcohol, non-carbonated drinks are the safest. If you refuse a glass of champagne under the chiming clock for you – bad manners, try to release “magic” bubbles from it. Practice moderation and never drink on an empty stomach.

What medicines to keep on hand?

If you suffer from gastritis, going on a visit on New Year’s Eve, take with you the necessary minimum of medicines that will help prevent exacerbation.

30-40 minutes before the feast, take antacid drug (Almagel, Maalox, Rennie and others), which will cover the walls of the stomach with a protective film.

If you feel like you are overeating, you can take enzymes, they will help to cope with the excess load on the stomach, pancreas. Enzyme preparations include mezim, creon and others.

In case of stomach pains, have in reserve antispasmodics: no-shpu, belastezin and others. It is better to refrain from analgin and other painkillers.

Finally, if you suffer from heartburn, bring one of the stomach acid blockers: omez, omeprazole, ultop, nexium, nolpaza and more. One tablet taken during an attack of heartburn will permanently relieve its manifestations. However, after the holidays, hurry to the doctor, the specialist will prescribe you a preventive course of treatment, in accordance with your condition.
