The liver does not produce sex hormones, but it plays a key role in their circulation in the human body. First, the liver produces cholesterol, a building material for steroid hormones. It is from it that, by chemical transformations, “male” testosterone and “female” estrogen are obtained. Secondly, the liver is engaged in the inactivation of hormones. Simply put, it destroys them and removes them from the body. It turns out that the state of the liver directly determines how much sex hormones will be produced and how timely they leave the human body. Both are important for good health and a healthy sex drive. Next, we will consider separately what happens to hormones in men and women when the liver fails and how to correct the situation.
The reaction of the male body to liver problems
The hormones responsible for sexual desire and erectile function in men are called androgens. Testosterone is perhaps the most famous of the androgens. If insufficient testosterone is produced in the male body, both the desire and the opportunity to have sex disappear at the same time, since against the background of a hormone deficiency, endocrine erectile dysfunction develops and problems with erection begin.
Another situation: when testosterone is produced enough, but the liver does not destroy it in a timely manner. It would seem that nothing terrible – a lot is not enough. But if only it were that simple. Undestroyed male hormones turn into female ones. That is why in patients with cirrhosis of the liver of men, we often see breasts, the size of which many women would envy. Other signs of an increased level of female hormones in a man’s body are the deposition of fat according to the female type, the disappearance of hair in those places where they are in men and absent in women, skin rashes, acne. And, of course, problems with sexual desire and erection.
The reaction of the female body to liver problems
A woman with liver disease can have sex, but she usually does not have enthusiasm in this direction. The fact is that if the liver fails, asthenic syndrome develops. It manifests itself in weakness, fatigue, intolerance to physical exertion, and a depressed emotional state. All these symptoms appear due to detoxification disorder, which mainly lies on the liver. Slags and toxins accumulate in the body and, figuratively speaking, pull it to the bottom.
Over time, a woman develops asthenic depression. It is stable and is not related to the degree of stress. It comes to the fact that overwork is caused by the simplest actions – brush your teeth and wash your face in the morning. There is apathy, pessimism, a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. Often anhedonia develops – the loss of the ability to experience pleasure from something. With anhedonia, there is a loss of motivation for activities that normally bring positive emotions, including sports, music, sexual activity, and social interactions.
In addition, the production of the necessary female hormones decreases and the level of “alien” male hormones increases. In violation of the utilization of estrogen, a woman is faced with pain and tightness in the chest, soreness during menstruation. The picture that emerges is bleak. Naturally, in such circumstances, the question of sex is not worth it.
How to return to normal sexual activity
Stop for a moment and look at yourself. In the flow of daily activities, we stop paying attention to what we eat, what we drink, how much time we spend in the fresh air, what medicines and how much we take. The most common liver problem in the world right now is non-alcoholic fatty disease. For it to appear, it is enough to eat high-calorie and bring your waist to 80 cm or more (for men – 94 cm or more). Do you abuse alcohol? You have a direct road to alcoholic liver disease. Unscrupulous in medicines – get drug-induced liver disease. With all the consequences. Including a decrease in sexual activity.
If there is a risk factor for liver disease in your life, it makes sense to check the condition of the organ. Donate blood for liver enzymes and do an ultrasound of the abdominal organs. At the initial stage, the liver responds well to medical therapy. As a rule, it includes hepatoprotectors based on ursodeoxycholic acid, diet Table No. 5, minimal physical activity (walking 30 minutes a day).
