How to help a newborn with colic at home, and what advice is dangerous to follow

Health Tips

Typical signs

“But how do we know that the child has colic ?!” – young inexperienced parents ask the pediatrician. “Believe me, you will immediately understand. When in the evening the child starts yelling for no reason (he is fed, the diaper is clean, he is not cold and not hot), know that they are infant colic. The next question is: how to alleviate the suffering of the crumbs? True, no doctor gives a definite answer to it. For there is no remedy that would help everyone one hundred percent. And the exact cause of colic is not clear. It is known that paroxysmal abdominal pain in a baby occurs in the afternoon and can last for several hours. The age at which this physiological phenomenon is observed is from two weeks to three to four months. It is believed that boys are more likely to suffer from them. Typical signs:

  • bloating;

  • flatulence;

  • possible constipation;

  • the child screams in pain so that the heart of any mother breaks.

What fashion doctors say

For example, pediatrician Fedor Katasonov in his book “Phaediatrics. A non-anxious approach” shares the following observation: “It is known that in families with an unfavorable psychological climate and in mothers with stress during and after pregnancy, children cry more often and longer. In addition, there is a study showing that colic is more common in mothers with migraines, which makes them suspect a migraine origin. Abdominal problems due to extrauterine maturation of the gastrointestinal tract are a common trigger for colic, but the cause seems to be in the nervous system.” Apparently, this is why attacks of pain and crying are observed in the afternoon, when the child’s nervous system is more tired.

His colleague, a favorite of young mothers, Dr. Komarovsky, also assures: baby colic is a normal phenomenon, signaling the maturation of the gastrointestinal tract. If earlier the child received food through the placenta, now it is through the mother’s breast or in the form of a mixture, which means that an adaptation process is required.

How to help your baby and yourself

That’s just parents from such explanations are not easier. Therefore, at any thematic forum, fathers and mothers share their experience of how they survived the fight against this scourge. People argue until they are hoarse, criticizing each other’s recommendations. From time to time there are completely crazy tips like “insert a piece of soap in the baby’s ass” … They explain with a serious look: the components of the product will cause irritation of intestinal motility, which, in turn, will provoke its emptying, after which the baby will feel better. The adviser, however, did not specify whether he had performed a similar trick with his own child. We definitely do not recommend doing this (it is fraught with burns of the mucous membrane)!

And what can you do when trying to help the crumbs at home:

  • try products based on simethicone. Simethicone is a defoamer that bursts bubbles in the intestines. It is not absorbed in the intestines, you can use every feeding;

  • use probiotics. According to Fedor Katasonov, reuteri lactobacilli are the only probiotic bacteria that reliably help with colic, but only for breastfed children;

  • debridat – antispasmodic in case colic is caused by intestinal spasms;

  • gas tubes – you need to get used to using them, but many mothers claim that they have become a salvation. To get rid of the gas, it is also recommended that after each feeding, wear the baby in a “column” (you will hear how noisy the excess air will come out), put the baby on the tummy more often, massage the latter with the palm of your hand (wave-like movement).

Along with the listed means: the attitude of parents is very important. If you yourself are in disarray, feeling helpless or poorly concealed irritation, this will be easily transmitted to the child and will not alleviate his condition at all. You need to try to convey calmness and confidence, because when he is three months old, the whole family exhales with relief – colic will remain in the past. The time is not far off when the baby will start teething, but that’s a completely different story.
