How is insulin resistance formed?

So, insulin is a hormone that controls the metabolism of carbohydrates in the body. It is secreted by the pancreas during meals. At this point, the cells take the necessary nutrients from the blood. It is thanks to insulin that glucose enters the tissues, giving us energy. But with insulin resistance, cells remain insensitive to insulin. As a result, they receive less nutrients, and the level of sugar in the blood is growing rapidly. A person, on the other hand, feels only short-term saturation: after a while, he again experiences hunger and, as a rule, also apathy, a breakdown.

The more a person eats sweet and starchy foods, the more he provokes the release of insulin into the blood. The level of glucose in the blood rises sharply. However, it is a mistake to think that it is the abuse of sweets that is fraught with resistance and diabetes. Normally, two to three hours after you have eaten a carbohydrate breakfast (for example, porridge with pastries), your blood sugar levels will naturally drop. That is why blood should always be taken on an empty stomach. If the indicator does not decrease, there is reason to suspect insulin resistance.

By what signs at home can you recognize this pathology in yourself?

  • fat deposits in the abdomen, waist circumference more than 80 cm in women, for men the figure is 100 cm;

  • red dots on the body;

  • black acanthosis (darkened areas of the skin, for example, on the back of the neck);

  • papillomas;

  • you do not feel full, you constantly want to snack on carbohydrates;

  • prostration;

  • high blood pressure.

Insulin resistance in pregnant women

Here is how one of the users with a similar diagnosis describes her condition:

“I gained a lot during pregnancy, but after giving birth, I still lost everything. At the same time, the doctor warned about insulin insensitivity. I revised the menu: I completely excluded rice, potatoes, white flour, sauces, sugar. I rarely eat, 4-5 hours after eating it becomes sharply ill: weakness, hands are shaking, wild hunger, sweating. Passes within 2-3 minutes if you drink sweet tea, juice, eat something sweet. The analysis showed elevated blood sugar.”

It is worth remembering that insulin resistance can be physiologically formed in pregnant women – due to changes in hormonal levels and an increased need for energy. For example, you can meet slender women who add 20-25 kilograms during pregnancy (normally it should be no more than 14 kg). Rapid weight gain is caused precisely by insulin resistance. After giving birth, the young mother must return to her usual weight, otherwise she may acquire type 2 diabetes. It is no coincidence that for nine months the gynecologist observes the weight gain of his patient, women regularly take a blood test for glucose levels. Expectant mothers are strongly advised not to get involved in foods with a high glycemic index (dispense sweets, pastries, fruits – bananas, grapes) and include two-hour walks and swimming in the daily routine.

What eating habits can contribute to insulin resistance?

On the face of it, they are the most correct. For example, frequent snacks, fractional meals. Insulin levels in the blood drop after three hours, but if you snack at these intervals, you do not give the hormone a chance to return to normal levels. In other words, you keep your insulin levels high, which is fraught. Therefore, more and more experts recommend sticking to three meals a day, when at least four hours pass between meals. In general, the recommendations are:

  • choose protein for breakfast combined with a small amount of complex carbohydrates, such as eggs with bread, avocado and salad;

  • dose the amount of sweets: instead of muesli, sweet cereals and yogurts, you should prefer berries or fruit, stop drinking tea, coffee with sugar and syrups;

  • refuse snacks (especially tea with something sweet);

  • engage in physical activity – they increase the sensitivity of cells to insulin; Suitable cardio, strength training a couple of times a week. The main thing is not to sit all day on a chair in the office: at least active walks are required;

  • follow the numbers on the scales. With weight gain, insulin sensitivity decreases;

  • control the intake of diuretics to lower blood pressure, as they also increase blood sugar levels;

  • normalize sleep: constant lack of sleep is fraught with overeating;

  • stop smoking, dose alcohol;

  • get enough magnesium. It is necessary for the proper absorption of glucose. People with insulin insensitivity lose large amounts of this mineral in the urine. There are quite a few magnesium supplements on the market, but not all of them contain the right form, have a low level of absorption. The best drug and dosage should be prescribed by a doctor.

Drug therapy for insulin resistance is always accompanied by correction of excess weight. In some cases, liposuction may be required.

Causes of insensitivity and what is fraught with

To verify the presence of insulin resistance, it is worth taking tests for:

  • insulin;
  • glucose
  • HOMA-IR index (calculated value of insulin resistance).

There can be quite a few reasons for insulin resistance, not just being overweight. For example, insulin resistance is fixed in about a quarter of a percent of people who are not obese. Risk factors:

  • genetic predisposition (if first-line relatives have diabetes);

  • high blood pressure;

  • infectious diseases;

  • pregnancy;

  • lack of physical activity;

  • regular stressful situations;

  • advanced age.

The danger of having insulin resistance is not only that the diagnosis can develop into diabetes. Pathology is fraught with the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (heart attack, stroke), infectious diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome, pancreatitis, infertility, gallbladder disease, breast, uterus, cervical cancer, the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, since insulin can affect blood vessels, contributing to plaque deposition.

Again, it is important to prevent insulin insensitivity from developing into type 2 diabetes. If you suspect a pathology, do not postpone a visit to the therapist and endocrinologist.
