Lower back pain: types, causes, treatment

Health Tips

Many of us are familiar with the feeling of pulling pain in the lower back. One has only to sit for some time in an uncomfortable position – and here is the result. There are a lot of reasons for low back pain, and Goodshapetips tells what she is talking about.

The fact that pain in the lumbar region, or lumbodynia, is very common is evidenced by the fact that about 80% of the population encounters it at least once in their lives. As a rule, acute pain becomes chronic over time, and, according to neurologists, a recurrent episode occurs in 40% of patients over the next year, and in the long-term period, pain recurs in a total of 85% of patients.

What does back pain indicate?

Today, lumbalgia is considered by doctors not as a diagnosis, but as a symptom, which often serves as a signal for the development of some internal disease. Any, whether it be aching or shooting, acute or chronic low back pain can be divided into primary, caused by the pathology of the spinal column itself, and secondary.

The latter signals a number of problems in the body, for example, an infectious or tumor process in the pelvic organs, osteoporosis, inflammatory diseases of the ovaries, kidneys and other organs, dysmenorrhea, lesions of large vessels or some diseases of the nervous system.

Main causes of back pain

Osteochondrosis is the most common cause of lower back pain, and it is quite easy to “earn” it by sitting in front of a computer for a long time, driving a car, or doing some kind of monotonous work, constantly repeating the same movements. As a result, there is an infringement of the nerve roots coming from the spinal cord.

As a rule, lumbar pain in osteochondrosis increases gradually, at first a person can feel only a slight ache in the lower back, which quickly disappears when changing body position. However, over time, the pain becomes stronger, intensifies even with a simple cough or sneeze. In addition, a variety of curvature of the lumbar spine becomes noticeable: right-left or forward-backward.

With a strong infringement of the nerve roots, there may be a decrease in the sensitivity of the skin and muscles of the lower half of the body, even a violation of the function of the bladder and colon.

Sharp and sudden lower back pain

Such pain intensifies when touching the body, at the slightest movement, when a person freezes in a bent position, unable to move. In this case, we can assume lumbago or sciatica.

In the first case, the pain is caused by a dystrophic process in the intervertebral disc, the nucleus of which literally falls apart into separate fragments.

With sciatica, there is an infringement of the nerve roots located near the sacrum, as well as damage to the sciatic nerve, the largest in the body. This nerve runs from the lumbar region, goes down the leg and reaches the very tips of the fingers, so pain can appear all over and cause serious inconvenience to a person.

Pain where the ribs attach to the spine

Such pain is usually dull, aching, radiates to the lower abdomen, navel and hypochondrium. When it appears, one should seriously think about kidney disease, since the pain is associated with stretching of the capsule in which the kidney is placed, and this happens, for example, with pyelonephritis or blockage of the ureter.

Lower back pain during pregnancy

It must be clearly understood that the causes of pain in the early stages are different from the causes of pain at the end of pregnancy. Do not panic if the lower back aches a little at an early stage, this may be a physiological process that does not require any measures.

But if the pain is sharp enough, throbbing, you should immediately contact a gynecologist, because it is during this period that the risk of miscarriage is not excluded. Also, at the initial stage, the level of the hormone progesterone in a woman’s blood rises, and the pain may be associated precisely with this.

It happens that the lower abdomen hurts along with the lower back, in which case a consultation with a doctor is also required, since it is urgent to make sure that the pregnancy is not ectopic.

In the late stages of pregnancy, pulling pain in the lower back is absolutely natural, because the baby grows, presses the head on the sacrum, and the hormone relaxin begins to be produced, which is necessary to relax the muscles during childbirth, and this can also cause mild lower back pain.

In addition, the closer to childbirth, the more often the body arranges “pain exercises”, training and preparing the expectant mother.

But strong and sharp pains in the lower back in late pregnancy may indicate a shortening of the cervix and the opening of the uterine os. This situation is already critical, and urgent medical intervention is needed.

Pain that is accompanied by fatigue and a desire to lie down

We can talk about a typical problem of middle-aged women, namely, the so-called instability of the spine. There is a lesion of the disc or intervertebral joint against the background of excess weight, and it can be difficult for a woman not to bend, but, on the contrary, to straighten up. And any movements begin to seem superfluous and unnecessary.

How to deal with lower back pain

Only a specialist doctor can answer this question specifically after a serious examination and diagnosis, so in no case should you delay a visit to him. The general list of measures to combat lumbalgia includes both medications and a variety of physiotherapy.

The following are used as the main methods of treatment:

  • Medicines – non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, analgesic, hormonal;
  • Injections (blockades) in the region of the intervertebral joints and certain muscle points;
  • Acupuncture;
  • Manual and physiotherapy;
  • Physiotherapy;
  • Surgery.

In addition, to limit the range of motion, it is sometimes recommended to wear special corsets that can significantly relieve the spine.

And finally, we must remember the common truth that says that the disease is easier to prevent than to cure. Therefore, do not forget about sports, gymnastics and outdoor activities, because in mobile and athletic people, back pain is much less common.
