Menopause: popular myths and amazing reality

Health Tips

1. Menopause and menopause are different concepts. The first is forever, and after menopause, functions may return.

Indeed, these are different things. Menopause is the time of the last menstrual period. Whereas menopause is a period that begins 12 months after menopause and lasts until the end of life. Is it possible to start the menstrual cycle again after menopause? Undoubtedly. Modern doctors have a lot of diagnostic methods that determine the cause of stopping menstruation, as well as therapeutic methods that will help start it again. But we must understand that this is not realistic in all cases.

2. Sex drive declines after menopause

If a woman does not take any steps to correct the symptoms of menopause, to maintain normal hormonal levels, then this is possible. In the first half of the menopause, this is associated with unpleasant symptoms that bother a woman, with changes in her psycho-emotional state. There are changes in the intimate area: the tone of the vaginal muscles changes, dryness in the vagina, insufficient production of natural lubrication during sex may disturb. Again, all of the above can and should be adjusted together with a gynecologist. This will avoid problems in sexual life during menopause.

3. The later the period began, the later menopause will come.

This is not entirely true. The timing of menopause depends on many factors. One of them is the ovarian reserve. For some women, it is measured in hundreds of thousands, for others, in tens. Of course, not all of them will reach the stage of ovulation and develop into eggs. This will happen only in 0.1-1% of the follicles, the remaining 99% will die due to natural death – apoptosis. At the same time, women who have less ovarian reserve are obviously the losers, because they will have to face the manifestations of menopause earlier. Lifestyle also affects the time of menopause: bad habits, dietary habits, concomitant diseases. The approximate age of the onset of menopause in a woman can be calculated based on that of her mother and grandmother. It is no coincidence that the doctor tries to collect a family history in order to predict the possible health risks of a woman. Therefore, we can say: if the mother’s menopause came early, the same thing will happen to the daughter. This, of course, is not an axiom. However, the probability of such a scenario developing is very high — it is 50-75%.

4. Late labor delays the onset of menopause

Alas, it is not. And in principle, the opinion that childbirth rejuvenates is nothing more than a myth. Pregnancy is a rather serious test for a woman’s body. Over time, our body does not become stronger and healthier, rather the opposite. Late childbirth will take away the remnants of health that the woman has left. It will tear where it is thin, and for each particular woman it is individual. Perhaps, if the child is desired and long-awaited, menopausal changes for a woman will go unnoticed, or she will endure them more easily due to a positive emotional mood.

5. Women get fat after menopause.

If a woman does not adjust her diet, leads a sedentary lifestyle, does not seek to maintain hormonal balance at a level in any way, then gaining excess weight is really possible. The level of estrogens, as well as androgens, decreases (but not so sharply). This imbalance can lead to metabolic disorders, as a result of which carbohydrate and fat metabolism changes. Moreover, a woman can gain weight rapidly, in a short period of time up to 8–10 kg. It will be very difficult to get rid of him in the future. There is also a redistribution of adipose tissue. Fat is often deposited on the anterior abdominal wall in an apple-shaped pattern.

6. After the onset of menopause, more wrinkles on the face suddenly appear because collagen ceases to be produced.

Unfortunately it is so. Sufficient estrogen synthesis is important for stimulating the renewal of skin fibers – collagen and elastin. As soon as its production decreases, a woman observes an increase in the number of wrinkles on her face, sagging soft tissues. It is no coincidence that cosmetologists lead women in menopause together with a gynecologist-endocrinologist. This is the only way to achieve a good and long-term effect from aesthetic procedures.

7. The most difficult time is the beginning of menopause, when hot flashes and irritability begin.

Conventionally, if we talk about symptoms such as hot flashes, fever, sweating, impaired psycho-emotional state, then they really manifest themselves most clearly at the beginning of menopause or in premenopause (the period preceding the last menstruation, lasting 3-4 years). But we must not forget about the individual characteristics of a woman. For some, this period lasts 1–2 years, for others 5 years, and sometimes, although rarely, 10–15 years…. Many women endure unpleasant symptoms, do not take any steps to solve the problem, believing that this is a natural process that you just need to go through. It is, of course, natural, but it can be experienced with greater comfort and with less loss to health. Menopause increases the risk of developing osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, changes in the intimate area – urogenital atrophy. Today, doctors have a real opportunity to help a woman maintain her quality of life, optimal weight and reduce the likelihood of developing diseases associated with changes in hormonal levels.

8. The approach of menopause can be determined by certain precursors that make themselves felt 2-3 years before it begins.

The menopause is divided into several stages, the first of which is premenopause – the years preceding the last menstruation. Its duration is 3-4 years. In premenopause, a woman can really face quite vivid manifestations that may indicate the approach of menopause. These include disturbances in the rhythm of menstruation and sleep, hot flashes, night sweats, emotional instability, memory impairment.
