Organic food: trendy or healthy?

We are what we eat. Fans of a healthy lifestyle and all those who simply want to live better and better, have long been familiar with the expression “organic food”. But this type of food is not at all a new trend and not a modern invention of scientists. In fact, this is absolutely “clean” ecologically food that we have lost during the existence of technogenic civilization. Such as ALL food was 3 centuries ago – i.e. it is food that was born without the participation of mineral fertilizers, hormonal supplements, pesticides and genetic engineering.

In the production of organic products, it is forbidden to use chemical processing methods, synthetic and genetically modified ingredients. In organic agriculture, it is forbidden to use chemical fertilizers, pesticides. They “support” the land with organic fertilizers: compost and manure, and use organic methods to control pests.

For example, plants of different species are planted in one area, so that pests find it difficult to find their favorite “dish”. The soil retains its natural fertility, and the plants retain their natural immunity, thanks to which they can resist pests on their own.

Organically pure vegetables and fruits are less attractive in appearance, they cannot be stored for a long time, but they are much tastier and more nutritious than those grown in the traditional way. They contain more vitamins, minerals, nutrients and biologically active substances.

Of course, due to the effort spent on cultivation and the lower productivity of the economy, ecological food is much more expensive than ordinary food: the cost of organic food in supermarkets is at least twice the cost of conventional products. For example, a loaf of “organic” bread made from environmentally friendly whole grains, without harmful additives in the form of salt, sugar and yeast, will cost a resident of our country about 100-150 rubles.

The high price is also associated with transportation costs – after all, organic food is mostly imported. On the other hand, the producing country guarantees us real security: strict standards and certification rules have been adopted abroad for those who want to sell organic food.

For Russia, departments of organic food are still very rare, in Europe, unlike us, almost every European supermarket has a department of organic products. There are specialized shops that sell exclusively organic products, as well as organic cafes and bars. The so-called smoothie bars serving smoothies are very popular. These are drinks made from organic fruits and vegetables, whipped with ice, with the addition of yoghurts, nuts, syrups and a variety of healing tinctures.

For Russians, for whom, according to statisticians and marketers, the price is still more important than the environmental friendliness of the product, the question may quite reasonably arise: is it worth paying exorbitant prices for the pleasure of indulging in a “clean” product if you live anyway, for example, in a dirty metropolis or a factory city?

Let’s figure it out. Most of the nutrients necessary for life a person receives from food, plant and animal. The composition of food is determined by the conditions in which it grew. If potatoes were sprayed with poison from the Colorado potato beetles, and chicken was injected with hormones for rapid growth, such food, once in our body, will do more harm than good.

In the pursuit of long shelf life, improved appearance, and increased profits from food production, the food industry has begun and continues to use increasingly strong chemicals (for growth stimulation), antibiotics (for long-term storage), genetic engineering (for pest control and growing food in unnatural environments). for her natural conditions).

Meanwhile, informal medical studies in some European countries and the United States have shown that with the beginning of intensive use in the fields of chemistry, the number of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, etc. has increased dramatically. After all, the chemicals used and other substances that enter the human body through food destroy its immunity.

And add to the harmful effects of chemicals and other things also the influence of polluted air, water, a sedentary lifestyle … If we cannot actively influence the ecology of our habitat, then at least we are able not to poison ourselves with the food we consume. Here is the answer to the question: is it worth trying to eat organic food.

Every year more and more Russians vote in favor of “clean” food, especially residents of large cities with higher education. According to the research company Comcon, 56% of Muscovites are ready to pay more for organic products. And in high-income groups, this share rises to 78%.

But what if you want to be “organic”, but it is either very expensive or impossible, because such food is simply not for sale in your city?

There are two relatively effective ways out: grow as much food as possible yourself, according to the principles of organic farming, or buy food that does less harm. For example, it is believed that the most low pesticide levels in asparagus, avocado, banana, broccoli, cauliflower, corn, kiwi, mango, onion, papaya, pineapple and green peas. Most high levels of pesticides – in apples, celery, cherries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, raspberries, spinach and strawberries.

Most nitrates accumulate lettuce, watercress, parsley and radish. It is best to grow them yourself or buy from familiar gardeners. Spinach, radish, kohlrabi and beets are also better to buy from trusted people. If there are none nearby, do not eat the stems of plants, in which there are more nitrogen compounds than in the leaves.

Cabbage, carrots, leeks, rhubarb, and dill are slightly more resistant to chemicals, but cabbage stalks and carrot cores are undesirable.

You can buy pumpkin, bell peppers and tomatoes where it suits you – they do not pose a big danger.

Ripe fruits and vegetables contain much less nitrates than premature ones. Therefore, it is better to buy young corn cobs and gherkins from the same acquaintances.

By the way, the acquaintances from whom you decide to buy “ecological” food should be checked by you seriously. Ideally, if you are set on a “long-term cooperation with a supplier”, go and make sure that he really lives 150 km from Moscow, in a remote village (and a site not near the highway), far from factories or collective farms from which groundwater and wind will introduce poisons into his “natural” economy.

For those who do not have such acquaintances, there is a third way out – you can find organic food sellers online who will bring it to your home in bulk quantities. Pleasure is not cheap – a full monthly set of products for a family of three to four people, including 20 kg of meat, 30 kg of vegetables and fruits, cereals and dairy products can be purchased for 1.5 – 2 thousand dollars.

Well, if none of the above methods suits you, but you still want to eat and feed your loved ones in the most healthy way, long-known ideas are at your service: eat more vegetables, fruits, eat complex carbohydrates and foods with fatty acids, prefer fish to meat , drink enough water, do not eat “junk food” (fast food, chips, Coca-Cola) and when choosing products, be guided not by the appearance or speed of preparation, but by the composition indicated on the package.
