Pain during menstruation: to endure or to be treated?

Health Tips

Pain, weakness, nausea, dizziness… In 2 out of 3 women, menstruation is accompanied by these symptoms. Most ladies take them for a simple malaise, but in medicine this is considered a disease – algomenorrhea (painful menstruation). Algomenorrhea can be not just a consequence of the physical structure of a woman, but also a sign of serious illness.

Algomenorrhea (dysmenorrhea, algomenorrhea) is one of the most common menstrual disorders.. It occurs in 60-70% of women aged 14-45 years. Especially acutely painful menstruation is manifested in adolescents. The pain syndrome is often combined with other ailments: in 84% of women, algomenorrhea is accompanied by vomiting, 79% – diarrhea, 23% – dizziness, 13.5% – headache, 16% – fainting.

Usually the pain begins 1-2 days before the onset of menstruation and ends on the 3rd day. Some women even lose their ability to work during this period. Algomenorrhea has an adverse effect on the physical, emotional and mental state of a woman.

Symptoms of algomenorrhea: cramping, aching, colicky pains in the lower abdomen, in the lumbar and sacral regions.

Painful menstruation, like any disease, requires treatment, but initially you need to determine its type.

In medicine, isolated 2 types of algomenorrhea:

  • primary,

  • secondary.

Primary algomenorrhea painful periods are called, caused by a disease of the nervous system or anatomical features of the structure of the genital organs of a woman, for example, underdevelopment or incorrect position of the uterus – an inflection of the body of the uterus in the area of \u200b\u200bthe internal pharynx of the cervix anteriorly or backwards. These reasons make it difficult for the outflow of menstrual flow from the uterus and increase its contractions.

If the pain during menstruation is not regular, but periodic, you should pay attention to such a phenomenon as a decrease in the threshold of pain sensitivity. An increase in pain sensitivity can occur due to psychological trauma, increased physical activity, overwork, and any other psychological or nervous disorder. In 40-50% of patients, the decrease in the threshold of pain sensitivity is of a genetic nature.

Secondary algomenorrhea is a consequence of inflammatory processes and various diseases of the genitourinary organs, such as: endometriosis, tumors, cysts, fibromatous nodes.

I would like to pay special attention endometriosisbecause one of the most characteristic signs of this disease is painful menstruation.

With endometriosis, endometrial cells begin to settle in “unusual” places for them – the ovaries, bladder, kidneys. Moreover, in a new place, they continue to function in the same mode: during menstruation, they swell and bleed, causing severe pain.

Another striking symptom of endometriosis is dark brown discharge before and / or after menstruation.

Heavy physical exertion, stress, passion for sunbathing and solarium can provoke endometriosis. Endometriosis, like “hidden” infections like chlamydia, is called the epidemic of the 21st century.

In order to correctly determine the causes of painful menstruation, it is necessary to visit not only a gynecologist, but also an endocrinologist, and undergo a series of examinations:

  • make smears on the flora,

  • tests for “hidden” infections (chlamydia, trichomoniasis),

  • blood chemistry,

  • do a bacteriological culture

  • check your hormones.

During a gynecological examination, the doctor must determine the position and size of the uterus, appendages, the presence of changes in the anatomical location of the internal genital organs. A pelvic ultrasound may be needed.

Having determined the causes of algomenorrhea, you can begin treatment. EIf its causes are some kind of inflammatory disease, then in the first place, of course, it is necessary to treat it.

If there are no serious diseases, a properly selected diet, vitamins, a healthy lifestyle, as well as minimizing stressful situations and increased physical exertion will help get rid of the disease – after all, it has already been proven that poor sleep (including lack of sleep), an abundance of stress, smoking, drinking coffee increase the intensity of pain during menstruation.

To relieve pain syndromes, painkillers are used (paracetamol, no-shpa, analgin, sedalgin, papaverine, baralgin, spazgan, ketorol). Regular use of oral contraceptives often helps relieve spasms.

You can also refer to folk remedies:

  • apply dry hot towels to the stomach and legs (you can replace them with hot sand bags),

  • put a hot compress on the lower abdomen.

Herbs will help:

Potentilla goose – 20 grams of grass pour 1 cup of hot water, boil over low heat, cool, strain and drink half a cup 4-5 times a day before meals. The squeezed mass can be applied to the lower abdomen in the form of a warm compress.
