Pets: what is the danger to humans?

Health Tips

Cute, touching, funny pets bring a lot of positive emotions into our lives. We enjoy watching them, taking care of them, walking, feeding, playing. We consider them full-fledged members of the family and, if possible, take them with us on trips and travels, and if we leave them for overexposure, we are very worried about their safety and health.

Moreover, some young couples prefer to have a cat or a dog instead of a child, and a quarter of women leave their cohabitants if they do not get along with their pets.

Many of us love our little four-legged friends so much that we allow them to eat from our plate, sleep on our bed, constantly stroke, kiss on the face and allow the animal to climb around the apartment where it pleases.

On the one hand, scientists have already proven that animals have a beneficial effect on our health: for example, cats are recommended for those who suffer from pressure drops and headaches. Thanks to the need to walk the dog, we breathe fresh air several times a day, and in general, positive emotions from communication benefit our body.

On the other hand, pets pose a great danger to us, especially for young children and the elderly. We decided to talk about this today in our article. If you decide to get one of our smaller brothers, pay attention to what is said below and think a few times.

So why are pets dangerous?

Hygiene and infections

Animals, like any other living beings, are susceptible to various diseases, and it is easy to “catch” an infection from them. Of course, good and proper pet care will significantly reduce the possible risks, but, unfortunately, not always.

First of all, I would like to say about the mistakes that many breeders make. Despite all the love for a dog or cat, it must be remembered that it is impossible to explain the rules of hygiene to them, so the owner himself must monitor their cleanliness.

Even if you thoroughly washed the dog after a walk, his paws will continue to touch the floor of a dirty corridor and spread the infection throughout the apartment. The same goes for cats.

Do you clean regularly? Excellent! But after all, with street shoes, every time a new batch of dirt enters our house, even if it is not visible. We also carry it with slippers, but we do not climb into bed or on the sofa shod. So why do so many owners let their furry pets lie in their chair, walk around the kitchen table and sleep with them?

And if a cat climbs into a crib, then this is already a crime on the part of parents in relation to their child, any doctor will tell you about this.

As for diseases that are transmitted to humans, one of the most dangerous is rabies. If your dog walks on his own, not on a leash, and is very curious, then there is a risk of contracting rabies from another dog or rat. The incubation period of the disease is long – 3-4 months, and then the disease progresses rapidly, so you will not immediately understand what is happening with your pet.

You can learn more about rabies and prevention measures from the article “Pets: what is important in spring.” Remember to visit the vet regularly and get vaccinated.

If your child suddenly has a fever, enlarged lymph nodes, lethargy appears, this does not always indicate a cold. Pay attention to the child’s skin: are there scratches on it from cat paws?

Playing with your own or yard cat, through small wounds from claws, you can become infected with lymphoreticulosis, which is also called “Cat Scratch Disease”. The incubation period lasts up to one and a half months and the disease itself will incapacitate the baby for up to a month. In any case, the doctor will prescribe the diagnosis and treatment, just keep in mind such symptoms. It is comforting that after the illness, immunity most often develops, which means that the cat can stay in your family.

Allergies to pet dander can lead to asthma, with pet allergy sufferers having a 5 times higher risk than non-pet owners.

We have given only a few examples, but in fact, many troubles can arise. For example, swimming in a dirty pond, your pet can also “catch” leptospirosis, which, if left untreated, ends in death.

You can learn about all other diseases from the specialized literature or from your doctor. Our task is to convince you of the following:

  • Be more careful when choosing an animal if there are allergy sufferers in the house.
  • Watch the animal on a walk, do not let him drink from a puddle, take anything in his mouth and eat, swim in dirty water, communicate with suspicious animals.
  • Wash the animal’s paws and belly after a walk and do not let it climb on furniture and in bed. The animal must know its place well.
  • Get your vaccinations up to date and visit your veterinarian regularly.
  • Strengthen the immunity of the animal, feed it fully and correctly, give vitamins and useful supplements.
  • Observe hygiene yourself, wash your hands if you stroked a dog or cat, even if it is homemade and, in your opinion, “clean”.

Injuries

Animals are different: melancholic and docile, frisky and curious, as well as aggressive.

When choosing a pet, many breeders do not take into account the characteristics of the breed. Sometimes you can meet a young mother with a stroller, next to which a dog of a fighting breed walks on a leash (and it’s good if it’s muzzled).

The owners of such dogs believe that their character depends primarily on education, but nevertheless, there are many examples when a kind, sweet dog causes irreparable harm to loved ones or neighbors. Remember, only a professional can educate a dog “with character”.

If you have small children in your home, keep in mind that even a kind animal can injure a child or bite if it is “squeezed” for too long. Explain to the baby what the consequences of his excessive attention to a cat or dog can be, and also be more careful about choosing the breed of an animal.

A pet can cause injury unwittingly. According to the US National Center for Injury Prevention, every year more than 80,000 people in this country are injured because of their pets. Most often this happens on a walk, if the dog abruptly pulls the owner along, or during the game.

If your dog is large and strong, it is better if someone who can keep him will walk with him. Do not let a child or an elderly person walk the dog.
