Random relationships: what are dangerous and how to protect yourself from undesirable consequences

Health Tips

Not all diseases of the intimate sphere, even if infected, are immediately determined in the test results. The main diagnostic problem is that all infections have a different incubation period – the time elapsed from the moment of infection until the onset of symptoms. In some cases, it takes several days, and in some – months. However, during these days, an infected person can already transmit the disease to his sexual partner. These diseases are diagnosed using PCR – a polymerase chain reaction method, which is characterized by a high degree of sensitivity.

  • Detection of chlamydia is possible within 1-3 days from the moment of infection. But, if at the first examination the presence of infection was not confirmed, it is still worth repeating the study after 2 weeks.
  • With syphilis, the duration of the incubation period can reach 90 days, although the disease can manifest itself after 10. On average, the infection is determined already in the period of 14-21 days. That is why it is recommended to take a blood test for syphilis twice – it is better to do this approximately after 3 weeks and 3 months after unprotected contact.
  • Diagnosis of gonorrhea is based on the identification of the pathogen in the discharge not only from the genitals, but also from the rectum, pharynx and eyes. The duration of the incubation period ranges from several hours to 4 weeks. The sensitivity of the technique is reduced in the absence of symptoms of infection in men, as well as in women in smears from the cervical canal (for the purpose of research, it is better to take vaginal contents). A culture study for gonorrhea makes it possible not only to identify the pathogen, but also to determine the sensitivity to antibacterial drugs, but without symptoms, the diagnostic sensitivity of this test also decreases to 50%.
  • Mycoplasma genitalium, which is also referred to as an STI, can be detected by PCR in the first days after infection.
  • The duration of the incubation period for trichomoniasis is from 2 days to a couple of months, and it is influenced by many factors, such as the state of immunity, the use of antibacterial drugs, and so on. Trichomonas can be detected in fresh preparations by microscopy.
  • With herpes, immunoglobulins in the blood are detected as early as 3 weeks after infection, but the duration of the incubation period can be up to 4 months.
  • It makes no sense to perform a serological test for herpes for every patient. Pregnant women are obligatory examined for herpes (especially with confirmed genital herpes in a partner), patients who have more than 2 unexplained periods of urogenital symptoms per year, in couples discordant for herpes, that is, in the case of confirmed herpes in one of the sexual partners.
  • With HIV infection, the incubation period is from 20 days – up to one year, on average about 3 months, in case of infection with hepatitis C – up to 140 days, B – up to 6 months. Usually, blood sampling for testing for HIV and hepatitis is performed 3 months to six months after an unprotected act.

If you suspect a possible infection, you should consult a doctor to solve the difficult task of diagnosing STIs. Also, do not forget that there is a preventive medication that can prevent infection, even such a formidable infection as HIV.
