Shannen Doherty, Laima Vaikule and other stars who beat cancer

Health Tips

Thanks to massive propaganda, breast cancer has ceased to be a “shameful” disease. They talk about it openly. There is a public call for screening. Even those who, in principle, do not access the Internet are aware of the “pink ribbon” symbol. And this can already be considered one of the greatest victories of mankind: thanks to such powerful agitation, most women have time to seek help at the earliest stages of the disease, and this greatly increases the chances of recovery.

The truth is that cancer doesn’t just attack the breasts. For example, as many people die from lung cancer as from tumors of the breast, colon, and stomach combined. But only very recently, and very few have dared to talk about the danger (and preventability!) of colorectal cancer. And in other types of oncological diseases, only the most desperate of the stars are recognized.

breast cancer

Reports on the course of their personal war with breast cancer were posted on social networks and voiced in interviews by Shannen Doherty and Kylie Minogue, Cynthia Nixon and Anastasia. Of domestic celebrities, the writer Daria Dontsova was the first to dare to speak in detail on this topic, then Nadezhda Kadysheva and Nadezhda Kadysheva admitted to Lyme disease.

In 2011, for her contribution to drawing attention to the problem of the disease, Kylie Minogue received an honorary degree from the British University Anglia Ruskin University.

Anastasia provoked a new surge of attention to the topic last year by agreeing to a frank interview and a photo shoot for Fault magazine (we later analyzed why, after a mastectomy, the scars were not on the chest, but on the back).

Stars who have beaten breast cancer (BC) are actively involved in charity work, support foundations to combat breast cancer, and take part in information campaigns. Stars on other fronts of oncology are not yet as active, however, they go on the offensive.

bowel cancer

In Russia, Svetlana Surganova spoke openly about this for the first time, in the West – Sharon Osbourne, the wife of musician Ozzy Osbourne. In her case, the prognosis was disappointing – rectal cancer metastases had already affected the lymph nodes, the doctors were pessimistic. However, Sharon once again confirmed that she is a woman with character, and gave the disease a real fight, and practically on the air – the filming of the Osbourne family reality show was not only not suspended, but also frankly covered the entire process of Sharon’s treatment, surgery and chemotherapy.

Colonoscopy is indicated for all women after 40 years of age with a frequency of every three to five years.

Other types of cancer

Kathy Bates was diagnosed with ovarian cancer back in 2003, but she hid the diagnosis from everyone for a long time. By 2009, the disease was defeated – and the fans, perhaps, would not have known about it if it had not been for the breast cancer that overtook Katy. Ovarian cancer and breast cancer are caused by a breakdown in the same gene, so they often go together. In 2012, she was diagnosed with breast cancer – and Bates immediately splashed out the whole truth.

Cybill Shepherd, Melanie Griffith, Jennifer Morrison were treated for melanoma. But only Shepherd did not try to hush up this story, but joined in the propaganda of regular diagnosis of dubious moles.

Sheryl Crow, who has spoken boldly about her battle with breast cancer, said last year that she was starting a battle with a brain tumor.

But this is exactly the situation for which screening is not provided. Firstly, brain cancer is not so common, and secondly, diagnostics are too expensive and unsafe in itself to be carried out “just in case”.

Preventive measures

Angelina Jolie has a special story: she famously struck a pre-emptive strike before the cancer even had a chance to start. In May 2013, the most beautiful woman in the world announced that she had removed both mammary glands. The reason was the examination, during which the actress found out that she was the carrier of the hereditary “defective” BRCA1 gene. Two weeks after the Jolie news broke, the number of women who wanted to get tested for the BRCA gene mutation increased by 64% in the US. Two years later, Jolie also preventively removed her ovaries, putting herself in a situation of artificial menopause. And this is still the most controversial story in the entire global anti-cancer chronicle.
