Ligament sprain is an injury that we can get with a sharp or unnatural movement in the joint, with an amplitude that exceeds its functional capabilities.

Ligament sprain is understood as a tear of part of the connective tissue fibers of the articular ligaments. The articular ligament is a strong bundle of thin connective tissue fibers that firmly hold several bones together in a joint.e.g. ankle, knee, elbow. With traumatic injury to the ligaments, the function of the joint is impaired.

Sprains are one of the most common injuries, and there is a high chance of sprains from an awkward fall on ice. Sprains often accompany joint dislocations and fractures.

Signs of sprain

As a rule, after an awkward movement occurs drawing pain in the area of ​​the affected joint of varying intensity, aggravated by movement. In some cases, movement becomes impossible at all.

However, unlike fracture, when sprained, there is never a deformity of the limb, pathological mobility and crepitus during passive movement. Swelling occurs at the site of injury, sometimes a hematoma.

If during the incident you felt a crunch in the joint area, the pain syndrome is very pronounced, the limb has completely lost its function, swelling is increasing it is advisable to consult a doctor. These signs indicate a severe sprain, possibly a complete rupture of the ligaments. Without qualified help, joint function may never recover.

Do not take sprains lightly. Such injuries do not always have a favorable prognosis; in some cases, they lead to an irreversible limitation in joint mobility.

Winter injury prevention

Try to choose comfortable shoes with good arch support and a tight bootleg.which will keep your ankle joints from moving too much. You need to be especially careful with winter shoes with high heels and stilettos: such models are very unstable, it is easy to slip in them.

Lace up your boots tightly to the very top of the boot. Remember that in children, the joints have more mobility, the muscles are not yet strong enough, the coordination is not perfect. Therefore, do not rush to put the kids on the ice. Injuries on the skating rink can subsequently come back to haunt the hypermobility of the joints, habitual dislocations and impaired movement. For young children, it is better to prefer skiing with straps, sleds and ice skates.

First aid for sprains

First of all, it is necessary to provide the victim with peace. Ice should be applied to the injury site. Cold will help stop bleeding in the tissues, reduce pain and relieve swelling.

With severe pain, you can take an anesthetic tablet: ibuprofen, analgin, ketorol, and so on.

Try to immobilize the damaged joint: this requires tight bandaging with a conventional or elastic bandage. In addition, there are special clamps. It is necessary to bandage the joint in a natural position, preventing its excessive flexion and extension with a bandage, as if strengthening the joint from the outside. During bandaging, do not overtighten the limb. This can aggravate swelling and impede blood circulation in the joint.

After providing first aid, it is advisable to show the injured specialist to exclude fractures and monitor the progress of ligament recovery. For full rehabilitation during the recovery period, physiotherapy exercises and physiotherapy are prescribed.
