Stress leads to obesity: who is at risk?

Health Tips

The results of the study, which lasted more than 25 years, were published in the American Medical Association (AMA) Journal of Psychiatry.

Actually, physiologists, endocrinologists and psychiatrists only confirmed and scientifically substantiated what we knew without them: stress leads to obesity, because it leads to overeating. And overeating in this case is akin to addiction – alcohol or drug addiction. A person cannot stop eating, not because his willpower is weak, but because the chemical bonds in the body have rearranged in a certain way. Some drink out of grief, others eat. And they eat, as it turned out, not just anything, but mostly fatty and sweet.

Food addiction, unlike alcohol and drug addiction, is still not officially included in the list of psychiatric diagnoses. But, in all likelihood, this issue will soon be reconsidered.

We already know that the love of sweets or fats, as well as the tendency to overeat, can be genetically transmitted – in this regard, food addiction is definitely akin to alcohol.

It was noted that men more often resort to “filling” stress, women resort to “jamming”. This distribution is due to socio-cultural prerequisites rather than physiological ones. But the very need to “disguise” a traumatic situation with a feeling of satiety or intoxication is characteristic of both sexes.
