How many times have they told the world … that alcohol is a poison. Drinking is bad! Another article written on this topic will not surprise anyone, except that it will make you grind your teeth a little. Well, as much as possible: everyone already knows about the dangers of alcohol! Everyone knows, of course, but not everyone is going to give it up forever. And why, exactly? Here is a drop of nicotine that kills a horse. And where is it written that a drop of champagne or cognac kills a horse or the most overwhelmed mouse?

In my opinion, nowhere. And from a bottle of beer after the end of a hard working week, no one has yet died, quite the contrary. Here the harsh instructions of my father come to my mind: “The main thing is not to smoke! And be careful not to drink too much!” Following his wise advice, I do not drink much, at least I try.

In addition, as a doctor, I know that there is a safe dose of alcohol: 30 grams per day in terms of pure alcohol. More specifically – 60 g of vodka, or 240 g of dry wine, or 0.72 liters of beer. It is known that moderate doses of alcohol are even beneficial for blood vessels. For some reason, cholesterol in such vessels does not linger, and, accordingly, the risk of heart disease is reduced.

Of course, I am not going to sing a laudatory ode to alcohol, especially since a safe dose is a safe dose, but very often after it an individual who consumes alcohol does not stop, but demands more and more. And three times the safe dose is still detrimental to health. Here proverbs and sayings come to mind. One of which: “Drinks like a horse”, and in the version for foreigners: “Drinks like a Russian”; and it is pronounced either with reverence or with horror.

There is an interesting pattern that few people think about. Why is wine constantly drunk in the Caucasus, starting from childhood, and alcoholics are not to be found there? Why do the small northern peoples drink themselves to drink within a month after they first try the “fire water”? Why do Belarusians often not think of a day without a glass, but know how to stop in time, while it is customary for Russians to drink until they lose their pulse, but rarely? Unless, of course, the case does not end with a drinking bout. After all, why is female alcoholism so much more difficult to treat than male alcoholism?

It turns out that the whole thing is in a special enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase. This enzyme is found in the liver, but the amount varies from person to person. So, the northern peoples practically don’t have it, so alcohol, getting into the blood, for example, the Chukchi does not decompose into components in the liver, but wanders through the body, acting on all organs and systems, destroying them and somehow disappearing through the lungs and skin . A little of this enzyme is also found among the Eastern peoples, therefore, for them, large doses of alcohol lead to sad consequences. But among the Slavs, alcohol dehydrogenase works much better. Therefore, alcohol is not so toxic for them (for us), and they (we) can drink more. It can be assumed that this situation has developed historically (how much each nation drank over the centuries) and was fixed at the genetic level.

This enzyme (alcohol dehydrogenase) has one interesting property – despite the fact that it decomposes alcohol, it is also stimulated by alcohol. That is, if a person has not consumed alcohol for a long time, then the amount of enzyme in his liver gradually decreases, and if he drinks an extra glass, he will get drunk much faster than his friend, who periodically drinks. It’s called “running the enzyme”, even popular magazines advise:

To make it easier to endure a festive feast with abundant libations, a few hours or half a day before the upcoming event, it is useful to drink a little alcohol, half a bottle of beer or a glass of vodka. In response to alcohol entering the bloodstream, the amount of alcohol dehydrogenase will increase, and then festive drinking will lead to fewer negative health consequences.

However, there is no need to flatter yourself: too “overclocked” enzyme, this is already a bad sign – alcohol is addictive. When more and more alcohol is required to feel intoxicated, this should be alarming. Remember: alcohol is an insidious and addictive thing! Becoming a slave to alcohol is not a tragedy?!

And if the addiction process has begun, it’s time to pull yourself together and (or) run to a narcologist! At the next stage, from constant overloads, the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme is depleted and cannot restrain the blows of alcohol, alcohol in an unchanged form begins to circulate in the blood and destroy everything that it comes across.

Returning to the problem of female alcoholism, I would like to talk about modern scientific data. Recent research explains why a couple of martinis inspire the usually reserved woman to exploits, making her the life of the company, while her companion sits thoughtfully in a corner, finishing his fifth glass of vodka. It turns out that the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase in women is 2 times (!) Less active (than in men), which makes them more sensitive to the action of wine and spirits.

“After drinking an alcoholic beverage containing 10 to 40 degrees of alcohol, women are much slower than men to “digest” alcohol, which allows more alcohol to enter the blood. In addition, alcohol remains in the stomach of women 43 percent of the time after how they drank drinks containing 10 to 40 degrees of alcohol.However, when drinking drinks containing 5 degrees of alcohol, there was no difference in metabolic processes between men and women, ”the researchers write in the April issue of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Studies “.

In other words, a woman’s body reacts to beer in the same way as a man’s body. But wine and strong drinks “hit” women twice as hard. So the safe dose of such drinks for the fairer sex should be halved: 30 g of vodka, 120 g of wine, 0.36 liters of beer.

And now we have smoothly moved on to the sad topic of alcoholism and alcohol abuse.

Alcoholism and health are incompatible concepts.

Firstly, alcohol destroys vital B vitamins in the body, and these are just the vitamins of beauty and beautiful, healthy skin. The face of a drinking woman acquires characteristic signs over time: persistent expansion of the capillary system, characteristic swelling, “bruising”.

Secondly, alcohol negatively affects the brain and nervous system. It “kills” the supply of vitamins C and B – the main “nervous” vitamins.

Thirdly, it raises blood pressure and increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Fourth, alcohol, like fat and sugar, is a high-calorie product. If you are overweight, adding new kilograms is completely useless. On the contrary, they should be discarded. Then the heart will feel better.

Fifth, and so on, alcohol impairs the functioning of all organs and systems.

It is especially destructive to the stomach, kidneys and liver. In the pathological physiology class, I saw with my own eyes the cirrhotic liver of an alcoholic (by that time already deceased) – a gloomy sight …

And, finally, alcohol abuse leads to addiction, and what this means for the person himself, his family and everyone around him … what troubles it brings, there is no need to say …

Here is the definition of alcoholism adopted in psychiatry: “A painful addiction to alcohol, multiplied by an obsessive state.” Doctors recognize as an alcoholic a person who is unable to control the consumption of alcoholic beverages, has lost power over himself, has fallen, in whom this condition negatively affects his attitude to work, family, society, and makes him socially dangerous.

Something about alcoholism and nutrition

Alcohol addiction can also develop from the use of certain products:

The use of sugar-containing products, especially at the end of a meal, leads to fermentation in the digestive tract and poisoning the body with fermentative and alcohol-containing substances. Then the need for regular alcohol consumption may develop, which gives such sensations as after eating sugar-containing products. By the way, alcohol and sugar consist of the same chemical elements (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen).

The use of indigestible pasta, meat, fatty, smoked, salty foods leads to stagnation of these products in the stomach and decomposition, followed by fermentation and decay.

What happens next is the same as above. In addition, you may develop a habit of drinking alcohol to stimulate the digestion of indigestible foods. Drinking alcohol with these products can partially help improve their digestion, however, along with this, alcohol, as a liquid, will be excreted from the stomach into the intestines quickly enough, carrying with it undigested food. As a result, this food mass will begin to rot or ferment in the intestines, causing poisoning of the body.

The use of predominantly boiled food, poor in useful substances (vitamins, mineral elements), leads to a decrease in overall tone, lethargy, and drowsiness. As a result, there is a need for the use of stimulants: meat, coffee, black tea, alcohol, tobacco, up to and including drugs. After a short period of excitement, more depression sets in and more cravings for stimulants, in particular alcohol. This style of eating and living leads to early withering of the body, diseases.

The use of predominantly refined carbohydrates: white bread, buns, sweets, etc. leads to a sharp fluctuation in blood sugar levels, causing functional hypoglycemia. This disturbed metabolism creates a biological need for alcohol. But these are the products that kind mothers and grandmothers basically stuff their children without thinking about the imminent consequences.

Scientists conducted an interesting experiment that clearly showed how malnutrition can lead to addiction to alcohol.

An experiment with thirty rats continued for sixteen weeks. One group was fed a high-carbohydrate diet, another group was fed the same diet but with added vitamins and minerals, and the third group was fed a varied healthy diet. What are the results of these experiments? Rats fed a high carbohydrate diet, when offered a choice of water or 10% ethyl alcohol, chose it and drank an average of 50 ml of alcohol, which is the equivalent of one liter of whiskey per day for an adult. Those who were supplemented with vitamins and mineral salts drank three times less alcohol, and those who received a balanced diet preferred plain water.

So, the abuse of refined carbohydrates, sugar, white bread, buns, sweets, etc. leads to metabolic disorders and creates a biological need for alcohol.

Thus, we can conclude that good nutrition, trace elements and vitamins included in the diet can prevent the development of alcoholism and even cure it!

It would seem that it’s time to rejoice and decide that the problem of alcoholism is solved. But this is very, very far away … Why? And where have you seen rationally eating people suffering from alcoholism? Moreover, where have you seen alcoholics who, after a glass of chatter, swallow multivitamins? .. And I didn’t see …

So let’s get back to the roots. Alcohol in small quantities is safe and largely pleasant, but in large quantities it is a poison that is easy to get used to (especially women!). And it is very difficult to get out of the habit, and often almost impossible. Be careful!

I recently learned an interesting fact: when drinking alcohol, you can not mix grape spirits and grains: brandy, champagne, wine and cognac do not mix with vodka, beer and whiskey! Such is the separate food …
