And everyone knows that the thistle is the national symbol of proud Scotland. But now we are talking about a slightly different variety of the plant – the southern version, which is most often found in the Caucasus and the Mediterranean and in the southern regions of Russia.
Milk thistle in the composition of medicines
The healing properties of milk thistle have been known for a long time. The father of botany, the ancient Roman physician Dioscorides, described the plant in his work On Medicinal Substances. The thistle was mentioned by another famous Roman physician and philosopher Galen. Avicenna did not bypass this plant. Milk thistle was also actively used in medieval Europe for burns, diseases of the liver and gallbladder.
Now milk thistle is included in a whole list of drugs – for example, Gepabene, Bonjigar, Silibor, Legalon, Karsil – dietary and diabetic products. Most often, leaves and seeds are used, in ground form they are called “meal”. Since the mid-fifties, the plant began to be specially cultivated for the pharmaceutical industry.
Useful properties of milk thistle
Why is this thorny plant so useful? It’s all about the huge number of different macro- and microelements, vitamins A, E, F, K and group B. One gram of milk thistle contains 16.6 mg of calcium, 9.2 mg of potassium, 4.2 mg of magnesium, 0.08 mg iron, 0.1 mg manganese, 1.16 mg zinc, 0.15 mg chromium, 22.9 mg selenium, 0.09 mg iodine, 22.4 mg boron.
Milk thistle gained its pharmacological popularity due to the substance silymarin. It is considered one of the most powerful hepatoprotectors (from the Latin words hepar – “liver” and protecto – “protect”). Due to its antioxidant properties, silymarin helps with various intoxications, acute and chronic conditions, post-hepatitis conditions and liver cirrhosis.
Our liver is a responsible and serious guardian of the body, a complex chemical plant. All harmful and unhealthy is filtered, neutralized, toxins are destroyed, and the right substances are distributed further throughout the body. Despite the high degree of regeneration, like no other organ, over time, the liver begins to work worse. Hepatocytes (special liver cells and the main functional unit that takes on the main work), unlike other cells, can only divide a limited number of times, which means that at some point they stop recovering.
Silymarin comes to the rescue. It takes on some of the blows and helps to carry out the work of hepatocytes: it does not allow the thin cellular structure to collapse, preventing damage to the membrane, helps to remove toxins from the body, stimulates the outflow and production of bile, and activates the regeneration process.
Milk thistle treatment
Milk thistle is used in the treatment of varicose veins, polyarthritis, cholelithiasis, liver dystrophy, poisoning, including alcohol poisoning, diabetes mellitus and, oddly enough, toothache. It is also often recommended after undergoing a course of radiation and chemotherapy.
In pharmacology, leaves, roots, seeds are used, from which oil and meal are made. The oil is used in the treatment of many skin diseases (acne, psoriasis), in some diseases of the reproductive system and hemorrhoids. It has excellent wound healing and anti-burn properties.
Milk thistle recipes
You can buy special medicines that include milk thistle or silymarin, or you can make your own medicine from milk thistle.
To cleanse the body and prevent liver diseases, a decoction, oil or tea from milk thistle meal is taken.
Decoction prepared as follows: two tablespoons of milk thistle roots and leaves, brew 0.5 liters of boiling water, leave for 8-10 hours, take half a glass three times a day
- Oil from milk thistle seeds It is recommended to take one teaspoon three times a day half an hour before meals.
- Seed meal it is very easy to make – just grind the grains, for example, in a coffee grinder. For tea from milk thistle meal, you will need to pour a spoonful of crushed seeds with a glass of boiling water, leave for ten minutes and drink two a day – in the morning on an empty stomach and in the evening before bedtime.
