Causes

The causes of hallux valgus have not yet been fully studied, but it is known that osteoporosis, flat feet, endocrine diseases, as well as genetic predisposition, that is, congenital weakness of the connective and bone tissues, play an important role. In addition, improperly selected shoes, tight, with narrow socks and high heels cause very significant harm. As a result of wearing such shoes, the load on the foot is distributed unevenly, the anterior section is loaded to a greater extent, deformity and arthrosis of the joint of the big toe occurs.

Symptoms of the disease

The first sign of the disease is inconvenience and pain when walking, fatigue, problems when wearing shoes, then painful corns and corns appear. The shape and position of the joints of the big and second toes gradually change, the “bone” grows, the skin in its place turns red and swells slightly.

Depending on the degree of deviation of the thumb, several degrees of severity of the process are distinguished:

  • 1 degree – deviation up to 15 °;
  • 2 degree – 15-20 °;
  • 3 degree – 20-30 °;
  • 4 degree – deviation more than 30 °.

At stages 3 and 4, as a rule, complications arise: ingrown nails, inflammation of corns and calluses, hammer-shaped curvature of the fingers, especially the second finger.

Treatment of hallux valgus

Since similar symptoms can be observed with other orthopedic diseases, it is first necessary to consult an orthopedic doctor. An accurate diagnosis can be established only after a serious examination: an X-ray image of the foot in three projections and plantography are required – determining the condition of the foot by analyzing their imprint on the plane. Only after making sure that the patient really has a hallux valgus, you can start treatment. We must be prepared for the fact that the process will be long and laborious.

Treatment of hallux valgus deformity of the foot is divided into conservative and surgical. The first is used in the initial stages of the disease and, unfortunately, does not lead to a complete recovery. Nevertheless, a competent and timely approach can significantly slow down the further progression of the deformity and delay the surgical operation.

Let’s talk in detail about the methods of conservative treatment. These include:

  • wearing orthopedic shoes, arch supports and night splints, as well as insoles and interdigital pads;
  • physiotherapy procedures;
  • intra-articular injection of hormonal drugs (hydrocortisone, diprospan) to relieve inflammation.

Orthopedic shoes should be soft enough, always with a wide toe and a heel no higher than 4 cm.

Valgus deformity of the first toe is often accompanied by flat-valgus deformity – flat feet. At the same time, the direction of the axis of the foot changes and its arches decrease. In this case, the shoes should have a high and hard back and a tight arch support. It is very important to use special orthopedic insoles, which are best made to order, taking into account the slightest features of your own foot.

No less important is the prevention of hallux valgus, which consists in changing the patient’s lifestyle itself. First, it is necessary to make it a rule to perform simple exercises daily to maintain the mobility of the foot joints. In particular, you can walk on tiptoe, roll small objects on the floor, pick them up with your toes, and the like. Secondly, it is very useful to massage the feet and calf muscles, after which it is good to make a foot bath with pine extract or sea salt.

Thirdly, you need to adjust your diet. The fact is that the progression of hallux valgus is greatly facilitated by the deposition of uric acid in the joints of the foot, so it is recommended to reduce the content of foods rich in purines in the diet – substances that lead to excessive accumulation of uric acid in the body. And these are products such as meat, some varieties of fish, seafood, strong broths, legumes, as well as tea, coffee, cocoa and chocolate.

And finally, fourthly, you will have to audit the shoe closet and put aside the “dangerous” shoes: tight, narrow, high-heeled. Leave the stilettos for the holidays, and for every day, choose comfortable shoes with a low, stable heel.

Valgus deformity in children

Toddlers most often suffer from flat feet, or plano-valgus deformity of the foot. The child begins to complain of severe fatigue and pain in the legs when walking for a long time, and visually it can be seen that the heel deviates outward. In this case, you should immediately go to an appointment with an orthopedist, since with timely and proper treatment it is quite possible to completely restore the normal condition of the foot.
