The group of organs in the body that we call the endocrine glands play a huge role in shaping, for example, our emotions and our mood.

Chemical and physical changes in the body, which are emotions, are directed by the brain through the endocrine glands. With the participation of iodine, the formation of thyroid hormones occurs.

These same hormones produced by the thyroid gland play a huge role: they regulate the intensity of the metabolism of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, heat production, affect the activity of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, muscle contractility and fatigue, excitability of the nervous system, and the body’s resistance to infections.

The main function of the thyroid gland is the regulation of metabolic processes. Increasing the amount of hormones speeds up the metabolism; a decrease in the amount of hormones leads to its slowdown.

In most parts of the world, regular food provides enough iodine for the normal production of thyroid hormones. But not everyone falls into the happy majority, and then the body begins to experience difficulties – the problem of the impact of iodine deficiency on human health is one of the most important and most ancient.

Iodine deficiency creates new conditions for the functioning of the body and its systems – as a result of iodine deficiency, conditions arise that have been called iodine deficiency diseases.

Iodine deficiency diseases also include intellectual retardation due to brain damage at different stages of formation, an increase in the frequency of congenital malformations, an increase in infant mortality, and neurological disorders (damage to the optic and auditory nerves).

Since the function of the thyroid gland and its structure depend on the supply of iodine from outside, these diseases are associated with environmental problems. There are areas where there is a deficiency of iodine in the soil and, naturally, food. These are the so-called endemic areas. In endemic areas, the daily intake of iodine in the body can be reduced by 10 times. This, in turn, leads to a decrease in the synthesis of thyroid hormones, 2/3 consisting of iodine. By the way, Moscow is recognized as a relatively prosperous region in terms of iodine content in food.

The main manifestation of iodine deficiency is endemic goiter – an enlargement of the thyroid gland, which develops as a result of iodine deficiency. in persons living in regions with iodine deficiency in the external environment. Insufficient production of hormones leads to an enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter), impaired thyroid function, too little thyroid hormone is produced, or they are not produced at all. The main reason is the lack of iodine in food.

The norm of iodine intake for an adult is 150-200 micrograms per day. In pregnant and lactating women, the need rises to 200-300 mcg. In order to prevent iodine deficiency diseases, it is advisable to eat seafood (they contain a lot of iodine): fish, shrimp, crabs, squid, seaweed. Among iodine-containing seafood, the cheapest and most affordable is seaweed. Fortunately, it contains the highest amount of iodine.
